What does a pediatric occupational therapist do?
Occupational therapy practitioners work with children, youth, and their families, caregivers, and teachers to promote active participation in activities or occupations that are meaningful to them. We believe active participation of caregivers and families in their children's lives is crucial to helping them achieve their greatest potential.

I graduated from St. Louis University in 1997 with a B.S. in occupational therapy. My husband was active duty in the Air Force so we moved several times due to changes in his assignments. I worked for 2 years in a skilled nursing facility in Illinois. From there, we moved oversees for 3 years, during which time I taught some adjunct classes on the military base. When we moved to Alaska, I worked with adults in hand therapy and then moved to the hospital, where I worked in the acute care, orthopedics, neurology, transitional care, and rehab departments. At that time, I transitioned to pediatrics where I have spent the past 15 years of my career. In Alaska, I worked for the Anchorage School District, and operated a small outpatient private practice. I completed my M.S. in Rehabilitation Science through OUHSC's on-line program in 2007. My family then moved to Rapid City, SD. I worked as a staff OT of an outpatient clinic and later managed that interdisiplinary team for two years. I currently work for Rapid City Area Schools and Building Blocks OT as a staff occupational therapist, working primarily with preschool and elementary age children in the city and rural areas, including Pine Ridge Indian reservation. I also provide early intervention services for infants and toddlers.
